Theology of Relationship

A major influence to AD SODALITATEM is the philosophical and theological understanding of gift and response. The act of giving is a simple act, but is experienced most completely when the giver has the opportunity to receive a response.
Another approach looks like this. Consider what it is like to learn about someone. You can learn their age, the color of their skin, their height, and weight, but not really know them. Having a conversation helps, but we interact with so many people in a day who we talk to but don’t form lasting relationships. Relationship is more than just being aware that someone else exists. Relationship is knowing someone in the context of gift and response.

It is for these reasons that AD SODALITATEM seeks to give a financial gift to the poor of parishes visited in the One Body One Spirit Project. AD SODALITATEM will continue to raise money for these parishes in the years following the initial pilgrimage of David Heimann.

Understanding the role a gift plays in forming a relationship are reflected in the very celebration of the Eucharist in the Catholic Church. God gave himself as gift to us in the person of Jesus Christ. This giving of self is reflected in the Eucharistic celebrations in which the people of God give simple gifts of praise and thanksgiving, but also bread and wine, which are changed in the Body of Christ and make us all One Body, One Spirit in Christ.

Funds donated to AD SODALITATEM are for the promotion of solidarity. AD SODALITATEM is not a development or relief organization. As such, it defers to internationally organized relief organizations to decide the manner in which the Church should respond to poverty. AD SODALITATEM prefers Catholic Relief Services as the charity of choice in this regard. AD SODALITATEM discourages the use of our network for direct solicitations of any sort. Requests made on behalf of the poor should be made through ligitmate channels. Any user violating this guideline will be disconnected from the network.

Current Needs

In addition to the financial goals of AD SODALITATEM, there are numerous non-financial contributions that can be made. Please look over our needs and consider assisting us by contacting us.

  • Translators  - we are in need of persons who can translate into multiple languages, especially materials which will be sent to bishops and church superiors in the coming months. Language skills in Spanish, Italian, French, and German are especially needed, but also languages of Asia and Africa.
    • Translators are also needed to develop what will be a multilingual platform for our website allowing viewers from various language groups to navigate our website.
    • Translators are also needed to help translate correspondence between young people in schools across the globe. These correspondence will help young people learn more about each other and grow in solidarity.
    • Publicity – Persons who are involved in media in the Christian media and public media who are willing to cover a part of our story are encouraged to contact us immediately. We want to get the word out!
    • Promoters – We need people who will volunteer to call parishes, visit schools, and spread the word of this amazing project. The more people who know, the farther our reach.
    • Educators – We are hoping to develop a team of educators who will assist in the development of lesson plans and online worksheets. Our pilgrims will have most of the information and can do a great deal of work, but the more volunteers we have in the United States organizing and formatting the information the pilgrims send back will allow the pilgrims to spend more time gathering information and meeting with people to promote solidarity!
    • Hosts in visited countries – Do you know someone who would be willing to host a pilgrim for a night or two? Let us know! Let them know!
    • Primary Contact in visited countries – the role of a primary contact is very specific and greatly needed for each visit. Click here for the list describing the expectations we hope to secure in a primary contact.
    • Prayer. This is God’s work and it can’t be completed without our constant attentiveness to the will of God. There is no better support for this attentiveness than to join in a community of persons praying to God for God’s continued blessedness on our mission and work.
